In the Garden: Potatoes

It’s getting to be that time of year again…..potatoes!

This year I decided to try doing a potato tower, instead of just growing in the ground. I set up my wire fencing in the late spring and started my plants at the bottom and gradually added dirt and hay around the sides.

Ran out of dirt half way through, so my tower stopped half way up. It will be interesting to see what happens, because even though it still grows, it has yet to get flowers on it.

I have another spot in my garden that I grew potatoes in last year, and in spring noticed some starts poking out of the ground, so I thought, “what the heck, let them grow and see what happens….” Well, they grew and grew and grew. I am thinking they are little potatoes I missed while digging up potatoes from last season. July came and they got REAL big. They have since flowered out….

…and are now are slowly starting to wilt.

I went out into the garden the other day and noticed a potato peeking out from under the dirt at me, and its looking like a big one. 🙂

So, I quickly covered up my “little” potato, and now just counting down the days when i get to go dig up my little treasures and compare the tower method vs ground growing potatoes….to be continued…
