Recipes: Basic Humus

I love some humus! But lets face it, it’s not cheap to buy, so instead I try to keep a ready stock of ingredients on hand so I can make it any time the craving hits me. 🙂 I will stock up on beans when there are sales along with my little coupons and most of the other ingredients are pretty cheap, except for tahini… it’s a little pricey, hard to find on sale, but totally worth it. You will be able to make TONS of humus from one jar.

Here is the basic recipe I use and then add variations when the mood strikes.

INGREDIENTS:

1 can garbanzo beans (15.5 oz)
1 tsp chopped garlic ( I like roasted garlic prechopped in the jar)
2 TBSP lemon juice
1 1/2 TBSP Tahini (puree of roasted sesame seeds)
3/4 tsp salt
black pepper to taste (some people use cumin)
1 TBSP olive oil
Pretty much all you do, is put beans, garlic, lemon juice, tahini, and salt in food processor and blend. add pepper and blend in again to taste. Then once you put the humus in a bowl you pour the olive oil over it. Oh, and if you want a smoother humus you can add a little can water to the processor too.
if you want to spice up taste you could try adding stuff like: marinated artichoke hearts, franks hot sauce, chili flakes, red peppers, or 1 TBSP honey.
Would love to hear the combinations of added flavors that anyone else uses. 🙂
